Attorney, Steven E. Shumer, a partner with Berger, Fischoff, Shumer, Wexler & Goodman, LLP, has practiced in the Long Island area for over twenty five years. He has devoted his legal practice primarily to divorce, divorce mediation and family law and has established a reputation as a knowledgeable advocate for his clients.  His belief, even in divorce cases, is that it is always best for parties to settle their disputes out of court rather than leave their futures in the hands of a system that has no familiarity with them personally, their life experiences, their children or their ultimate goals.
Mr. Shumer’s experience as a matrimonial litigator gives him the ability to impart his knowledge upon divorce clients as well as divorce mediation clients to provide a real-world understanding of how disputes between parties will likely be decided if a Justice of the Supreme Court were asked to rule on an issue.  This knowledge and experience allows receptive divorce clients and divorce mediation clients to be guided by Mr. Shumer’s years in practice to assist them in reaching a peaceful, out-of-court agreement that serves the best interests of the parties and their children.
Mr. Shumer has a different philosophy about the divorce mediation process than many other attorneys and certified mediators.  Mr. Shumer believes that open communication, at all times, is of paramount concern but also understands that with the aid of today’s technology, numerous in-person, in-office meetings can be minimized, thereby allowing the parties to take less time off of work, and have less of their personal time imposed upon by the divorce mediation process.  Mr. Shumer welcomes the opportunity to discuss his divorce mediation process with you and your spouse in a free consultation.
When divorce mediation is not a viable option, Mr. Shumer has built a reputation as a knowledgeable and compassionate advocate for his clients in divorce and family law matters. Steven E. Shumer has handled ground breaking cases. He has been interviewed and quoted in various publications including the New York Law Journal and Long Island Newsday. Mr. Shumer has authored a monthly legal column that appeared in over 25 local newspapers across Long Island and has participated in lectures to educate the public on matters involving divorce and family law. Mr. Shumer has nominated for “Best of Long Island” under the category of “Divorce Lawyer.” Mr. Shumer and the attorneys at Berger, Fischoff, Shumer, Wexler & Goodman, LLP, also have extensive trial experience. Throughout his more than twenty five years of practice, Mr. Shumer has been involved in numerous litigations in the courts of Long Island and the five boroughs of New York City.
Attorney Steven E. Shumer has handled thousands of cases ranging from divorce mediation, divorce/separation actions, uncontested divorces, custody and visitation proceedings, support disputes, multi-million dollar property distribution issues, order of protection matters, relocation issues and even cases of child abduction.
Mr. Shumer, graduated from Brandeis University (cum laude) in 1989. He received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1992, where he was a member of the Hofstra Labor Law Journal. Mr. Shumer is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and was admitted to the Bars of the State of New York and Connecticut, ultimately settling his practice within Nassau County, Suffolk County, Queens County and the surrounding areas. Steven E. Shumer is a past president of the 1st Resource Chapter of BNI, a worldwide networking group for business professionals.
